Advice for male patients taking Valproate
This information is male patients taking valproate as well as their families and caregivers. Always read the information that comes with your medicine and talk to a doctor, nurse, or pharmacist if you have any concerns.
It is important that you do not stop or reduce your medication, unless advised to do so by a healthcare professional.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued advice for male patients taking Sodium Valproate. Valproate is a medication used to help manage epilepsy and some mood disorders. Brand names include Epilim and Depakote.
The MHRA has advised that studies have shown a potential small increased risk of neurodevelopmental problems for children conceived whilst the father is taking Valproate, or has taken it in the last 3 months.
